FOR PATIENTS AFTER A CARPAL TUNNEL RELEASE

Keep your arm elevated for 24 - 48 hours above the level of your heart.

Medications:

You may have given prescriptions prior to discharge. It is important that you take this medication as directed.

 Incision:

Keep your incision area clean. To dry the incision gently pat it with a clean dry towel. Do not soak your incision or apply lotions, creams, powders, or ointments until your incision is completely healed. If little strips of tape are applied to the incision, they will usually fall off on their own. However, after two weeks you may remove them.

Activity restrictions:

Do no lift, push, or pull any objects greater than five pounds. This includes, for example, a vacuum cleaner.

Pain control:

Take your pain medications as prescribed by your doctor. You may have a sore throat, difficulty swallowing or hoarseness for approximately one week after surgery. You may continue to have some pain or a while. Once you have run out of pain medication, you may use Tylenol Extra Strength for pain relief.

Diet:
You will need to eat a well-balanced diet to promote healing of your incision and keep up your strength. If you find your are having difficulty with constipation, increase your fluid intake to six to eight glasses a day (limit caffeine products and alcoholic beverages) and eat high fiber foods, such as fruits, vegetables, beans and bran.

Follow-up appointment:

It is important to follow up with your doctor at his office. Make an appointment to be seen two weeks after your discharge from the hospital. The phone number is 904-253-7644.

Call your doctor:

Notify your doctor if any of the following occur:

Increased pain and/or numbness in either your arms or legs in any distribution.
Difficulty walking.
Difficulty controlling bowel movements or urination.
If there is redness or drainage from the incision site.
If you develop persistent fever.
